Historic Center of Cuenca
Spanish King Charles V. drew up plans for Cuenca in the 16th century and it has been an example of a UNESCO Colonial City ever since. The city still maintains the original design and is considered one of the best places in Ecuador to see Spanish architecture in the country along with Quito.
Touring the historic center of Cuenca is, therefore, essential! Impressive sites include the Old and New Cathedrals, the latter with its imposing blue domes. There are many open squares such as the Central Plaza Calderón and the smaller San Sebastián. Traditional markets such as the colorful flower market with indigenous cholas (ladies) selling their products as they have done for centuries. Or stroll Cuenca's cobblestone streets and people watch to get a sense of the city's history.
Cuenca TOP TIP: Visit Plaza de los Geranios Colgantes for the best photographic views of the blue domes of Cuenca Cathedral. This beautiful plaza patio is also the perfect place to relax, have a coffee or craft beer, and people watch.
